Let me start off by stating that David Cronenberg is one of my favorite directors. I enjoy his work during the last decade over his work from the 80's and 90's, but I still admire him a great deal. His new film is called Cosmopolis. Cronenberg wrote the screenplay based on a novel by Don DeLillo. The official storyline reads:

Riding across Manhattan in a stretch limo in order to get a haircut, a 28-year-old billionaire asset manager's day devolves into a odyssey with a cast of characters that start to tear his world apart.

Here is the problem I am having. This new poster is good. It's not great, but I like it. The teaser however, was horrible. I'm confident enough that the movie will be good, but I think they made a huge mistake by putting out this teaser. What do you think?

Here is a new poster for the upcoming film, Neighborhood Watch. The movie was directed by Akiva Schaffer, the director of Hot Rod. I for one, am exited about this. I really enjoyed Hot Rod (I know a lot of people hated it) and the marketing (trailer/poster) is working well.

One of the best series in The Notebook on MUBI, are the "Movie Poster of the Week" posts. I was looking through the archive and came across this great post about the various international posters for Francois Truffaut's, The Bride Wore Black. Below are my favorite selections.

The Refinery recently created this great poster for The Hunter, starring Willem Dafoe. It was directed by the relatively unknown, Daniel Nettheim and based on the novel by Julia Leigh. Leigh recently wrote and directed the beautiful and haunting, Sleeping Beauty. The Hunter will be released in the US sometime soon.

I really like these new character posters for Rodrigo Cortes' new film, Red Lights. Cortes did a great job on his last feature, Buried. Tackling a film that takes place completely inside a coffin is commendable, especially if it works.

Red Lights is a paranormal thriller that stars Robert De Niro as a psychic being analyzed by Sigourney Weaver, who plays a professor. Elizabeth Olsen and Cillian Murphy round out quite the solid cast. The posters were designed by Rev Creative.

There are certain directors that always have great marketing posters and one-sheets. Almost always, the studio has full control over who they hire for the designs. Frequently they have an in-house design department in charge of marketing. Almost always the posters come out looking like every other poster created within the last five years. Steven Soderbergh is one of the rare breed of directors who seem to always have great poster designs. Here are the majority of poster designs for his films.

Romeo and Juliet is usually everyone's first taste of Shakespeare. I remember the first time I read the play and watched the 1968 version of the film in High School. At nearly the same time, Baz Luhrmann's, Romeo + Juliet was released. I think it's safe to suppose that most younger people have seen the new, stylized version starring Leonardo DiCaprio before reading the original play itself.

Well, it seems as though the time has come for a new, traditional film version of the play to be released. Julian Fellowes has written a screenplay, simply titled Romeo and Juliet, that is being directed by Carlo Carlei. Hailee Steinfeld stars as Juliet, Douglas Booth as Romeo, Paul Giamatti as Friar Laurence, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Benvolio and Ed Westwick as Tybalt. Damian Lewis (Lord Capulet) has recently been cast, as well as Natascha McElhone (Lady Capulet), Stellan Skarsgard (Prince of Verona), Lesley Manville (The Nurse), Christian Cooke (Mercutio), Tomas Arana (Lord Montague), Laura Morante (Lady Montague) and Leon Vitali (Apothecary).

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Fellowes said:

“We felt that it had been quite a long time since there had been a romantic, traditional rendition of the piece...people have made Romeo since then — and some very good ones — but they were set in modern Ohio or whatever. This isn’t that. This is the romantic medieval love story as conceived by Shakespeare. We felt that really what we needed was just to make it slightly more accessible to today’s generation. That, I hope, is all we’ve done. My dream would be that you watch it and you think you’ve watched the whole thing written by Shakespeare.”

Who knows how the younger generation will respond to this new film version, but I know there will be a lot of filmgoers exited to see a new presentation of an old, classic play by Shakespeare.
Mel Gibson is getting his ass kicked by Mexicans. Does that sentence make you want to see a new movie written by and starring Mel Gibson? At least one studio thinks that people will want to rent this movie. It's called, Get the Gringo (previously, How I Spent My Summer Vacation) and it's going straight to Video-On-Demand. It was completed back in 2010 before his embarrassingly public marital problems...to put it lightly. After two years, hopefully the public has calmed down and forgotten that Mel Gibson hates Jewish people. Check out the trailer below and decide how much Gibson you can tolerate.

Here are the best film inspired prints from the last few months.

Peter Strain is an artist/illustrator from Belfast. I recently stumbled on some of his film poster work and thought that it warranted a post. His hand lettering is great.

It seems like everyone is talking about Kevin. The newest release from Oscilloscope Laboratories, currently in theaters, is Lynne Ramsay's, We Need To Talk About Kevin. The film has all kinds of great buzz and one of the best distributors as support. Another thing that this film has going for it, is great marketing in the form of one-sheets and posters. Each design has a different style and all are very well realized.

Here is the first official trailer for Wes Anderson's newest film, Moonrise Kingdom:

After his last animated feature, Fantastic Mr. Fox, I am exuberant about his return to live action films. As with his previous efforts, Robert Yeoman is handling the cinematography. We are certainly going to be in for a visual treat. The trailer includes no shortage of small tastes of the signature Anderson style we've come to expect. A nice cherry on top of this cinematic sunday, is the presence of Edward Norton. He will undoubtedly make a great addition to the ensemble. Now all we have to do is wait until May 16th.

Werner Herzog is one of the greatest documentary filmmakers. His credits include Grizzly Man, Encounters at the End of the World, and 2010's Cave of Forgotten Dreams. His upcoming release, Into The Abyss, started as the pilot episode for a new television series, but Herzog became intently focused on one subject. As of a few weeks ago, Discovery Communications has announced the start of production on the series, Death Row.
Here is another batch of new screen prints. Don't forget to visit Reelizer to see more.
